Where is my data stored?

On a virtual private server we rent, in the United States, with the database on the same machine. Coasting is a small operation and the honest picture is a simple one - there is no fleet of data centres behind this.

A copy of the database is taken every night and sent to Backblaze B2 cloud storage, so a lost machine does not mean lost conversations. We have restored from one of those backups to check it actually works, rather than assuming.

Only two people can reach the server: the founder and the automated caretaker that runs the service.

If you need your data in a particular country for legal reasons, Coasting is not the right choice today. Ask us before you rely on it.
